Ex-Houston superintendent is leading a new district, plus more K12 hires

Millard House II is replacing Monica Goldson at Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland.

Millard House II, the superintendent ousted in this spring’s state takeover of Houston ISD, has landed on his feet at the helm of another large school district, this time in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Not long after his last day in Houston, House was introduced Wednesday as the new superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools, a 131,000-student district in Maryland. Only the previous week, House—in his final act as the Texas district’s superintendent—delivered the keynote speech at Houston’s Carnegie Vanguard High School graduation, which his daughter attends.

House will replace Monica Goldson, who had announced in January that she would step down at the end of 2022-23 after 32 years in the district due to “political infighting” among members of the school board. House has been a high-level administrator in multiple states, having previously served as superintendent of the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System in Tennessee, chief operating officer of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina and deputy superintendent of Tulsa Public Schools in Oklahoma. He began his career as a P.E. teacher.

More superintendents switch places

Asheville City Schools in North Carolina has chosen a new superintendent after its initial finalist withdrew. Maggie Fehrman, who has been superintendent of City Schools of Decatur in Georgia since 2012, will take the helm in Asheville in place of Rick Cruz, the deputy Houston ISD superintendent who pulled out earlier this month due to a family medical emergency.

Two other superintendents switching places include Robert Graham, who will become the next superintendent of Pulaski County Public Schools in Virginia after having led Radford City Public Schools for the past eight years. He was previously a principal and an assistant principal in Pulaski County.

Also in Virginia, Hampton City Schools has named one of its own longtime administrators and educators, Raymond Haynes, as its next superintendent. Haynes, whose career in education began over 28 years ago in Hampton City Schools, has been on the district’s leadership team since 2014, serving as executive director of schools and chief of secondary school leadership.
