Mass. education officials report more than 2,500 new COVID-19 cases among students, staff

In the last week, 2,236 students and 318 staff members in Massachusetts public schools have been positive for COVID-19.

In the last week, 2,236 students and 318 staff members in Massachusetts public schools have been positive for COVID-19, according to a report released Thursday by education officials.

This is the first report of the school year that includes a week’s worth of COVID cases as reported by schools and districts to the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Last week, DESE issued the first COVID report of the school year, which included 1,420 total positive cases – 1,230 students and 190 staff members – from Sept. 13 to 15.

DESE’s reports come out each Thursday and cover a time frame of positive cases reported from Thursday to Wednesday.

Thursday’s report shows a much higher number of students with COVID than any week during the last school year, when hybrid and remote learning options were still in play. The highest weekly case count among students last year was 1,095 in mid-April.
