A brand new teacher finds her footing thanks to the power of mentors

“I’ve learned more in these first 50 days than I have in my entire educational career.”

Those are the words of first year teacher Merrit Jones. She is a 6th-grade social studies teacher at Baptist Hill Middle High School in rural Charleston County, South Carolina.

Jones is now one academic quarter into her teaching career and as she explained in a recent conversation, she’s already learned that there’s really no substitute for the on-the-job learning of being a teacher.

“Now that I’m in the classroom, I absolutely know that you can’t understand the work of a teacher without being in the classroom.”
