Looking for PD on AI? Try this free course for teachers

Once a teacher completes the course, they’ll be given a certificate they can bring to their district for professional development credit if their district and/or state allows it.

It’s been well over one year since the public release of ChatGPT, the artificially intelligent chatbot that’s taken the world of K12 education by storm. To this day, many folks—especially students—require more guidance on AI use. This new resource may allow your teachers to meet this need.

Last week, Google, in collaboration with MIT RAISE, a new initiative from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that seeks to drive learning and education surrounding AI, released a free generative AI course for educators. The two-hour class is designed to equip teachers with the essential skills needed to harness AI tools.

“This responds to the need for continuous innovation in our school district,” Jose L. Dotres, superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, said in a testimonial about the course. “By empowering educators with the latest  advancements in AI, we’re not only uplifting professional practices but also giving them evolving tools to enhance the ever-changing landscape of teaching and learning.”

Miami-Dade is one of several school districts that are partnering with Google to bring these courses to their district.

By the end of the course, according to Google’s blog post, teachers will know how to use generative AI tools to:

  • Create lesson plans and materials.
  • Tailor instruction for different abilities. For instance, modifying lessons to meet the needs of students who vary in reading levels.
  • Streamline everyday tasks like drafting emails.

Once a teacher completes the course, they’ll be given a certificate they can bring to their district for professional development credit if their district and/or state allows it.
