Ransomware pummeling cash-strapped US schools

In what has become a routine, if depressing, ritual, the Los Angeles Unified School District has been trying to fend off a ransomware hack conducted by a group called Vice Society.

The incident was notable because of the size of the district—the second-largest in the nation—and because school officials very publicly refused to pay the extortion demand. Vice Society, as promised, began posting personal data about students and staff on Sunday in what the district described as a limited disclosure.

But the overall story is numbingly familiar.
