People Watch: Texas district’s board chooses superintendent—with state takeover looming
Harlandale ISD trustees voted to select Gerardo Soto as the new superintendent, even as a state takeover is looming. Soto, the district’s executive director of operations, will replace longtime Harlandale ISD leader Rey Madrigal, who retired in August in the wake of a Texas Education Agency investigation that found issues with the district’s procurement practices, board dysfunction and financial mismanagement. Brian Maher, the superintendent of the largest school district in South Dakota, announced he’s stepping down. After serving the Sioux Falls School District for about five years, Maher announced he will resign in June 2020. Read more.
