One year after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., the urgency for new gun restrictions has declined, but roughly half the country is concerned a mass shooting could happen at a school in their community, a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll finds.
School leaders would be able to suspend a student after the first instance of fighting. Students who repeatedly disrupt class or are persistently disrespectful could end up in an alternative school. These are among the changes the Detroit school district is proposing to the student code of conduct.
A Ohio state representative is proposing a bill that would prohibit districts from eliminating busing in the middle of the school year. Districts would also have to keep busing from the previous academic year if they want a levy on the ballot.
