Michigan supplemental state budget includes $150M for COVID-19 testing in K-12 schools

K-12 schools in Michigan are expected get $150 million for COVID-19 testing under a supplemental budget lawmakers sent to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer late Tuesday.

A conference committee made up of key lawmakers from both the House and Senate met Tuesday morning and approved $724.8 million in new spending for the 2022 fiscal year, which began Oct. 1, and $116.8 million in new spending for the 2021 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30.

Nearly all of the new spending comes from federal coronavirus relief funds, though about $71 million comes from the state’s general fund.
