Alabama schools investing $434M in COVID aid on athletic complexes, weight rooms, ‘zen rooms’

Alabama schools plan to invest more in facilities with the final round of federal COVID relief funding than in any other category of spending.

Statewide, based on spending plans filed with the state department of education, Alabama school districts are planning to spend 26%, or nearly $434 million, of $1.7 billion they received directly on facilities. Montgomery County Schools’ plan to spend $130 million was not available and has been excluded from this analysis.

Alabama officials are planning to replace thousands of HVAC units, repair dozens of roofs, install hundreds of air filtration systems and replace lots of old carpeting with tile or vinyl flooring.
