There’s an app that can help educators learn to pronounce names. With NameCoach, schools email students a link that invites them to record their names. Recordings and phonetic spellings can also be integrated into an LMS.

NameCoach CEO Praveen Shanbhag says he was inspired to start the company, in part, after his sister’s name was “mangled” at her college graduation ceremony.

“In graduate school, I started going by ‘Bob’ in certain situations” Shanbhag says. “It was kind of tongue and cheek, but that kind of story pops up a lot, especially for younger students who end up participating unwittingly in the devaluing of their identities and culture.”
