The North Clackamas School District is moving its school board meetings online for the foreseeable future, citing concerns about safety and civility.
The change comes after some parents packed a late October meeting to berate the district over LGBTQ+-friendly and sex-positive literature in its school libraries and what they deemed a bullying atmosphere for conservative-leaning or Christian students and their families.
It’s an unusual move for an Oregon school district, but not unprecedented. At the beginning of this school year, the Salem-Keizer School District, Oregon’s second largest, moved its school board meetings online, after what district superintendent Christy Perry described as “threats and potential safety issues … occurring from adults all along the political and ideological spectrum.”
