Dozens of districts in Carolinas close or go remote awaiting hurricane that blasted Florida

Several of the largest districts in the Carolinas are closed, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, and Charleston, Greenville and Wake counties.

As hurricane-ravaged schools across Florida began working to determine when they might reopen, Tropical Storm Ian forced dozens of schools in South Carolina and North Carolina to close or shift to remote instruction on Thursday and Friday. Multiple districts on or near Georgia’s coast were also closed as the week came to an end.

Depending on their location, Florida districts were pounded by massive storm surges, destructive winds and inland flooding, and now face rebuilding and potentially lengthy power outages. The worst damage appears to have been done when the Category 4 hurricane made landfall in Charlotte and Lee counties in Southwest Florida. Almost all of the state’s districts are closed for the rest of this week.

Ian is now forecast to make another landfall in South Carolina as a strong powerful storm, or even as a hurricane again, on Friday afternoon. Several of the largest districts in the Carolinas are closed, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the Charleston County School District, the Greenville County School District and the Wake County Public School System.
