Fla. governor orders grand jury investigation of Broward schools

Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered a statewide grand jury investigation Wednesday into how Broward County’s school district and other systems across the state have handled student safety and security.

DeSantis announced the action at the Broward County Courthouse, a day before the one-year anniversary of the Feb. 14 school shooting that left 17 dead.

But the governor stopped short of suspending school board members or embattled superintendent Robert Runcie, as some parents of Parkland victims have urged. DeSantis said he didn’t have the authority to suspend Runcie, an appointed official, and removing board members could be an overstep of his authority.
