New resource helps districts prevent IEP, 504 plan implementation failures

Date:

LRP Media Group, a recognized leader in the special education publishing industry, has released IEP and 504 Plan Implementation Strategies for Compliance and Student Success. This new resource explains districts’ obligations to implement students’ IEPs and 504 plans — whether through in-person or remote learning — and the consequences of failing to fully implement a plan. Drawing on case law, the book then outlines a variety of practical strategies district administrators can take to ensure teachers and other educators carry out their obligations under students’ plans, including strategies for drafting IEPs and 504 plans, communicating with staff members, and preparing for teacher absences.

Additionally, the book contains several sample forms that districts can utilize or modify to help ensure proper implementation, several checklists to assist with staff development, as well as guidance on:

  • Proper dissemination of IEPs and 504 plans to staff members.
  • Responding to student refusal of special education, related services, or accommodations.
  • Monitoring implementation of IEPs and 504 plans.
  • Conducting appropriate 504 evaluations to reduce the risk of implementation failures.
  • Implementing assistive technology provisions.
  • Implementing special education services during emergency school closures.

“Implementation failures that often lead to time-consuming litigation, compensatory education awards, and attorney’s fee awards, as well as loss of educational benefit for affected students, are one of the most common liability risks districts face,” said author Joseph L. Pfrommer, Esq. “And yet, there are practical steps districts can take to significantly reduce those risks and enhance student learning.”

IEP and 504 Plan Implementation Strategies for Compliance and Student Success is available for purchase from LRP Publications’ online store.
