LRP Media Group, a recognized leader in the special education publishing industry, has released Conducting Virtual Meetings That Comply With the IDEA and Section 504. This new resource reviews the IDEA and Section 504 rules districts must follow in conducting IEP meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, and MDRs for students with disabilities and explains how those rules may impact those meetings occurring in the virtual setting. The book also offers best practices to ensure your virtual IDEA and Section 504 meetings are as successful as your in-person meetings.

Additionally, the book contains several sample forms and charts that readers can adopt and use for their own virtual meetings, along with guidance on:

  • Providing compliant prior written notice under the IDEA;
  • Conducting practice runs and addressing technical difficulties for staff and parents;
  • Improving parent participation via the platform;
  • Ensuring students and parents receive needed accommodations under Section 504 to fully participate;
  • Preparing teachers and staff for the meeting; and
  • Protecting student privacy in the virtual setting.

“The boom in videoconferencing technology has made it easier for districts to hold IEP meetings, Section 504 meetings, and manifestation determination reviews even when physical attendance is impossible,” said co-author Amy K. Onaga, Esq. “However, districts that routinely use this technology may need to take additional measures to ensure their virtual team meetings are compliant with federal disability laws.”

Conducting Virtual Meetings That Comply With the IDEA and Section 504 is available for purchase from LRP Publications’ online store.
