New book offers 50 ways to test your knowledge on IEPs

Date:

LRP Media Group, a recognized leader in the special education publishing industry, has released Meet the IEP Challenge: 50 Scenarios for Staff Compliance Training. Each part of this 2020 book relates to a component of the IEP that is required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act: 1) A statement of the child’s present levels of academic achievement and functional performance; 2) a statement of measurable annual goals, including academic and functional goals; and 3) a description of how the child’s progress toward meeting the annual goals will be measured and when that will be provided to parents. School district administrators, school attorneys, special educators, general educators, and related service providers can review these together or independently to put themselves to the test.

Each part of the book features a brief introduction of the IDEA requirements linked to the component. That is followed by hypothetical scenarios — IEP Challenges — designed to test the reader’s understanding of the pieces of the IEP and how they fit together. The reader will be asked if the hypothetical description of a portion of a PLAAFP statement, goal, or progress monitoring plan is sufficient. The book also features four appendices that include checklists and forms to help develop present level statements, goals, and progress reports.

The 2020 book also quizzes readers on whether:

  • A present level statement conveys a student’s coping capabilities.
  • A goal allows a student to hone his turn-taking skills.
  • A team is properly reviewing a student’s progress toward online safety skills.
  • A present level statement touches on a student’s linguistic needs.
  • A goal allows a student to bolster his harassment reporting skills.

Meet the IEP Challenge: 50 Scenarios for Staff Compliance Training is available for purchase from LRP Publications’ online store.
