Voters have soundly rejected a proposed eight-town merger between the Berkshire Hills and Southern Berkshire regional school districts.
Seven towns held simultaneous special town meetings on the question on Monday, with three towns voting against the plan. A fourth town, Egremont, shot the plan down on Saturday.
In an overflowing meeting, Sheffield residents overwhelmingly rejected the merger by a 503-99 vote. Monterey voters were narrowly opposed, 87-73. In New Marlborough, the vote count was 165-112 against the merger. Egremont’s vote was 143-78 against the plan.
