Choctaw County schools stand to lose nearly $3 million next year after voters again rejected three property tax renewals on the Nov. 8 ballot.
The loss puts the school district in conflict with Alabama law, too, because it leaves the district with only five mills dedicated to schools–half as much as state law requires.
But the next steps are still unclear. The Choctaw Sun-Advocate reported the county’s commissioners expect they will have to make up the difference–about $1.5 million, but it’s not clear where the money will come from.
