When it comes to addressing a shortage of teachers in Michigan classrooms, one school group thinks it has the answer: Hold on to those the state already has.

Enter TeachMichigan, a fellowship effort adapted from work done by Teach for America Detroit. The group hopes to recruit new educators to the profession by retaining and developing those already in at-need communities via stipends and professional development.

Michigan is the first state in the country with this type of Teach-for-America-related program, said TFA Detroit Executive Director Armen Hratchian, with the goal being to net 30 teachers per participating district per fellowship.
