All Philadelphia students will likely have mandatory lessons on the history and significance of Juneteenth beginning in the 2023-24 school year.
The city school board will soon vote on a Juneteenth education resolution, requiring the subject be taught “in all content areas in K-12 classes.”
If passed, the measure would require the Philadelphia School District to work with educators, administrators and community members “to develop and provide age-appropriate instructional resources, materials and professional development opportunities that support the teaching of Juneteenth.” District officials also promise to host events and offer resources to understand the holiday and Black history.
