A one-word change to Connecticut law will make a major difference for thousands of Connecticut families with young children beginning next year.

As part of a large education bill passed through the state legislature last month, students will be allowed to enter kindergarten only if they have turned age 5 by the start of September. The change will take effect July 1, 2024, affecting as many as 11,500 children for the 2024-25 school year.

Previously, the cutoff was January, meaning parents had the option to send 4-year-olds to kindergarten as long as they were turning 5 before the new year.
