The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions voted 17-5 to approve and favorably report the nomination of Miguel Cardona to serve as Secretary of Education. This moves the nomination forward for confirmation by the full Senate.
Then President-elect Joe Biden nominated Cardona for the post in December. Cardona, the education commissioner for the state of Connecticut, has served in roles including assistant superintendent, principal, and elementary school teacher.
Biden named Philip Rosenfelt, the deputy general counsel for program service in the Office of the General Counsel, to be acting Education secretary while Cardona undergoes the confirmation process.
