Nearly three years after leadership at Portland Public Schools removed armed city police officers from the hallways of its nine high schools, the district is cracking open the door to a renewed relationship with law enforcement.
Under a broad proposal shared with the city, the Portland Police Bureau and school board members this week, armed officers could be back patrolling school grounds and perimeters by the start of the 2023-2024 school year, but those officers wouldn’t be stationed inside buildings, except by invitation.
