Houston Independent School District is gearing up to pay high-performing principals $65,000 more than the lowest-rated school leaders in a plan discussed Thursday night at a Board of Managers meeting. HISD Superintendent Mike Miles revealed his pay for performance principal evaluation system, the highly anticipated special education plan, and teacher attendance updates to the state-appointed board of managers.
Miles’ principal evaluation system proposal is another reform under his Destination 2035 Plan, and according to district documents, aims to improve the quality of instruction and address the student achievement gap. Miles’s plan, titled The Leader Effectiveness and Development System (LEAD), bases the principal’s effectiveness on student outcomes on assessments, the principal’s school campus quality of instruction, climate and culture, and the school action plan.
