Calling the educator shortage a crisis, the state Assembly Education Committee unanimously approved a dozen bills Thursday that aim to help New Jersey recruit and retain more public school teachers.

At a press conference introducing the measures earlier that morning, Timothy J. Purnell, executive director of the New Jersey School Boards Association, described a clear need for them.
