Des Moines Public Schools takes different approach to new laws on education and gender identity

Iowa’s new education laws require schools to keep parents in the loop regarding their student’s gender identity, along with parental consent to change a child’s name or pronouns.

Now, without guidance from the Iowa Department of Education, Iowa schools are tasked with making their own policies, resulting in different interpretations of the law across districts.

The biggest policy difference, so far, has been when staff should notify parents of a child’s name or pronoun change.
