School districts such as Alabama's Birmingham City Schools are taking innovative steps to ensure a sustained academic rebound, a new report finds. Here's how.
“The biggest part of this bill will identify the top-performing teachers in the state who are leaders in their school, mentors to their colleagues, and who are in assignments where they do the greatest good for the kids that are in the most need,” said the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Lincoln Fillmore, R-South Jordan.
"We worked on creating the story with the people of the community—it's their story. Community members wrote their own story of what they wanted their community to look like for their children," Superintendent Jennifer Lowery says.
"As school principals and district administrators, you have credibility in your community and trust in your schools and districts that uniquely position you to help save lives," U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona wrote in a letter.
Citing an urgent need to act after Uvalde and shootings outside a high school and a church in Iowa, Gov. Kim Reynolds said the state would award up to $50,000 each to 1,500 schools to fix vulnerabilities. Like many other Republicans, she rebuffed calls for stricter gun control while embracing efforts to “harden” schools.
Over the past decade, the teacher shortage crisis has grown in the United States and many other countries. There is much to be done before the situation is under better control and new common-sense solutions are installed.
The proposal comes as the district is struggling to attract teachers and faces a looming financial cliff, with federal stimulus funds distributed during the pandemic running out this year.
