The Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education unanimously approved during its Monday, Dec. 18 meeting the closing of 10 schools across the city through a campus restructuring plan.
District leaders say the closures will help right-size GRPS for a smaller student body and ensure resources are equitably distributed across the district. GRPS enrollment has fallen by nearly 30% over the last 15 years, which means many school buildings are half-empty.
Superintendent Leadriane Roby called Monday’s vote a “game changer” in the district’s ongoing efforts to improve facilities and create a better learning environment for all students across the district.
