Alabama reading scores are improving while the rest of US struggles, but thousands of students face retention

Reading scores are improving in Alabama, but thousands of third graders could still be held back this year if they can’t catch up over the summer.

When adjusted to current benchmarks, about 88% of third-grade students are reading on or above grade level, compared to 86% last year.

Students are getting better at phonics, decoding words and reading comprehension, officials say.
