A Massachusetts superintendent lamented a 'difficult work environment' created by the school committee while a New Jersey district fired its leader in the wake of a lawsuit alleging offensive behavior.
"Be open, be honest, be respectful—those are words I hear from students, especially our older students who are trying to find out who they are and what they'd like to be in this world," Superintendent Shaun Carey says.
In Florida, a ripped Israeli flag was found at Equestrian Trails Elementary School, which is part of the Palm Beach County School District. Swastikas have been drawn at other K12 buildings.
The Uvalde school district has picked its new superintendent after a year without a permanent leader, as a large Florida district and a half dozen others also filled vacancies at the top.
"There were no traditions or routines yet," Principal Ahna Davis says of Cabot Freshman Academy. "We got to create the school that we wanted. Ten years later, it is still a fantastic school!"
Districts are raising salaries, building apartments and giving teachers more planning time. But, with superintendents warning of worsening staff shortages, districts may be overlooking another solution: student teaching.
A principal's role in student achievement is immense but some educators may not quite comprehend the full scope of a building leader's influence on outcomes.
Superintendent Peter Hannigan's series of video interviews with students and other activities was "renewed" for a second season after a five-episode run last school year. "Being visible as a superintendent is one of my top priorities," says the Chicago-area district leader.
Proponents say no-phone rules reduce student distractions and bullying. Critics say the bans could hinder student self-direction and critical thinking.
