Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered a statewide grand jury investigation into how Broward County's school district and other systems across the state have handled student safety and security. But the governor stopped short of suspending school board members or the district's embattled superintendent.

Seeking funding for school safety measures to prevent shootings, a Pennsylvania state lawmaker is proposing a 10-percent sales tax on violent video games. The tax revenue would be distributed to school districts undergoing projects to improve safety, such as installing bulletproof glass, metal detectors or security cameras.

The 25 sheriff's offices participating in the state's school guardian program have spent nearly $2 million to buy firearm supplies such as ammunition, weapons and gun holsters. At least $3 million has gone to pay for salaries and benefits of employees involved in the training process, according to a News Service of Florida analysis.

There is little evidence of a public schooling infrastructure crisis, and massive new federal spending would likely send much money from taxpayers outside of districts to taxpayers in districts who refuse to use their own money for new construction. Maybe that reluctance is because many taxpayers sense that there hasn't been broad "underfunding" of public schooling or a building crisis.
