Thanks to a change in state law, a growing number of Minnesota school districts are embracing e-learning on days when the weather makes it too dangerous for students to get to school. With snow and cold weather forcing schools to cancel as many as nine school days this year, the "digital days" allowance has enabled schools to stick closely to the original schedule and avoid extending classes into spring break, holidays or staff training time.

This year, many Minnesota school districts are being caught by surprise because of a special education funding formula passed in 2016 that is just now going into effect. The governor has proposed $76 million in new special education funding to help local school districts deal with the new shortfalls.

High school students can choose alternative paths, such as construction, welding or cosmetology, instead of attending a traditional four year college. Unfortunately, many students do not know about alternative routes because teachers and administrators are only informing certain high school students about these programs.
