Several vacant superintendents’ posts have been filled just in time for the 2023-24 school year.

Acting superintendent Michele Mitchell has been appointed the full-time superintendent of Newport News Public Schools in Virginia. Mitchell had worked 11 years as the district’s executive director of student advancement, overseeing social work and psychological services, dropout prevention programs, special education services, gifted programs, school counseling, social-emotional learning and school-based mental health programs.
Mitchell began her career as a teacher in Newport News and has also taught and served as a crisis counselor in Virginia’s Fairfax County Public Schools.

Juliette Pennyman will become superintendent of the Hudson City School District in New York on Sept. 1. Pennyman has previously served as interim superintendent of the Niskayuna Central School District in New York; assistant superintendent of teaching and learning in the Reading School District in Pennsylvania and chief of the Rochester City School District in New York.
Joseph Clark has been named the next superintendent of Westerville City Schools in Ohio, 10tv.com reported. Clark has been the superintendent of Nordonia Hills City School District since 2009 and has previously been an administrator in Barberton City Schools and Kent City Schools, all in Ohio.

In Texas, Forth Worth ISD administrator Raúl Peña has been named the lone finalist to become the next superintendent of Hutto ISD near Austin. Peña has been the Fort Worth ISD’s chief talent officer for the past two years and has been an administrator and principal in Dallas ISD, Irving ISD and Lewisville ISD, beginning his career as a bilingual teacher in Dallas.
