Superintendent turnover is not slowing down this summer

Summer may be a slower time in classrooms but not so much for school boards grappling with superintendent turnover.

Fia Davis, superintendent of Bronx High School Districts 8, 10, and 11 in New York City Public Schools, is moving on to take the helm of Freeport Public Schools on Long Island. Davis was previously a deputy superintendent in the Bronx and a principal for 15 years.

Also in New York, Tasha Potter has been promoted to superintendent of the Penfield Central School District. Potter has been the district’s assistant superintendent for equity and access for the past three years and has served in similar roles for Monroe One BOCES and Greece Central School District.

The Waterloo Central School District has appointed Sarah Cupelli as its new superintendent. Cupelli is a deputy superintendent for the Auburn Enlarged City School District and has been an administrator in the Syracuse and Geneva city school districts. And in the Hamburg Central School District, Superintendent Michael Cornell will retire at the end of the 2024 and be replaced by Thomas Adams, WIVB reported.

Assistant Superintendent Victoria White, a 26-year educator, has been promoted to superintendent of the Dupo Community Unit School District 196 in Illinois. The Salida Union School District in California has chosen its next leader, Dante Alvarez, a senior director at the Manteca Unified School District who has also been an administrator in the Empire Union School District and Ripon USD.

Lawrence Public Schools in Michigan has picked Ryan Williamson, a high school principal from a nearby district, as its next leader. The Smackover-Norphlet School District in Arkansas has chosen Douglas “Bo” Smith as its new superintendent. Smith was previously an administrator in the Camden-Fairview and Parkers Chapel school districts.

In Texas, Sabine ISD Assistant Superintendent Monty Pepper will replace longtime Superintendent Stacey Bryce, who announced his retirement this week, the Kilgore News Herald reported.

  • Superintendent Sedrick G. Clark has resigned from Gladewater ISD (Texas), effective Dec. 31
  • Superintendent Jill Day is retiring from Ardmore City Schools (Oklahoma)
  • Michael Gill has resigned from Hanover County Public Schools (Virginia)
  • Bill Gronseth has resigned from Saint Peter Public Schools (Minnesota) to take a position in another district.
  • Michael Meyer has resigned from Lincoln Park Public Schools (New Jersey)
  • Ray Porter has retired as superintendent of the Tallapoosa County Board of Education (Alabama)
  • Superintendent Tim Travis will retire from Saugatuck Public Schools (Connecticut) in December
  • Superintendent Doug Van Zyl will leave Lakeville Area School District (Minnesota) at the end of the school year.
