After weeks of turbulence, it appears Ann Arbor Public Schools Superintendent Jeanice Swift is ready to resign from the Michigan district she has led for the last 10 years.
The school board will vote on Sept. 13 on the separation agreement it has hammered out with Swift, who has been supported by some board members and the district’s teachers union but faces opposition from parents of special education students, MLive.com reported.
After just two years, Quoc Tran has left the superintendent’s post at the Culver City Unified School District in California. His resignation was effective immediately on Aug. 15 but the the district’s board of education commended Tran for his leadership during the pandemic.
In Massachusetts, Brockton Public Schools Superintendent Mike Thomas has left the district for an extended medical leave, the city’s mayor announced. Earlier last week, district officials announced Brockton Public Schools is facing a $14 million budget deficit, The Enterprise reported.
Several superintendents switch districts
Several current and former superintendents have landed in new communities in recent days. Robert Gildea has been hired as superintendent of Pennsylvania’s Lower Dauphin School District after having led the Hollidaysburg Area School District since 2013. In the same state, Superintendent Christopher Bigger is relocating to the Chambersburg Area School District after having been in charge at Littlestown School District since 2015.
In New Jersey, Watchung Borough School District has chosen Julie Glazer— a former superintendent of Nutley Public Schools—as its next leader. Michigan Superintendent Joshua Rothwell is moving to Kingsley Area Schools from Forest Area Schools while Superintendent Timothy LaGrange is making a farther trek between top posts, from the Southwest Dubois County School Corporation in Indiana to the Kittitas School District in Washington.

In Kentucky, Kyle Estes has been promoted from interim to permanent superintendent of Russellville Independent Schools. Estes has previously served nine years as superintendent of Hancock County Schools. Elsewhere, David Belding was named the lone finalist to become superintendent of Midlothian ISD in Texas after helming Aubrey and Mislap ISDs over the last decade.
More new hires
- Wesley Golden will take the helm of the Clinton Community School District (Iowa) when current Superintendent Gary DeLacy retires on July 1, 2024.
A few superintendents have also recently announced plans to retire:
- Chad Jones will retire from Decatur ISD (Texas) on June 30, 2024.
- James Morse will retire from the Oyster River Cooperative School District (New Hampshire) in June 2024.
- Amy Stewart will leave the Warren County School District (Pennsylvania) in March.
