The Maryland State Board of Education is considering changes to its current school rating system, that critics say does not show student growth—but a rollout may not happen for another two years.
School leaders were previously allowed, but not required, to share such information with other schools. Tuesday’s emergency action changed one word—from “may” to “shall”—in the policy on sharing records of students charged with “reportable offenses,” which include serious criminal offenses such as murder, arson and armed carjacking.
The racial disparity of students in the classrooms is markedly different: white students at 34%; Black students at 30%; Latino students at 21%; and Asian students at 7%.
