Southern Columbia Area Superintendent Jim Becker will carry a gun on the job after the school board voted Monday to amend his contract to add the responsibilities of an armed security guard.
According to the amendment, Becker is now responsible for the safety and security of staff, students and the greater school community and will be permitted to carry a firearm on district property.
“It’s something we’ve been talking about. The school and school board has safety as its No. 1 priority and we looked at ways to do this,” Becker said when reached for comment Tuesday. “I think by me doing it, I feel it’s going to increase school safety.”
