The House passed on Dec. 9 a continuing resolution, H.R. 8900, that would extend funding for federal agencies, including the Education Department, through Dec. 18.
The CR will allow another week for legislators to negotiate and pass an FY 2021 omnibus appropriations package that would fund federal agencies through the end of FY 2021. However, if negotiators aren’t able to come to an agreement, they may consider a longer-term CR that will punt the issue to the next Congress and incoming Biden administration.
H.R. 8900 moves to the Senate next for consideration. If the Senate passes the CR, it will be sent to President Trump’s desk for signature.
The government is currently operating on a CR that expires Dec. 11. Failure to pass a CR or omnibus could lead to a federal shutdown over the holidays.
