Knox County Schools will stop selecting valedictorians and salutatorians in 2030, electing instead to use a system that honors a percentage of the highest-performing students.
The change aligns with national trends to eliminate what can be a toxic level of competitiveness.
Traditionally, valedictorian and salutatorian honors have gone to graduates with the highest and second-highest grade point average from each high school.
