Superintendents are still on the move, though in smaller numbers than they were earlier in the year.
Several districts filled vacancies within the last week, including a couple of Florida school systems that are led by elected superintendents. Santa Rosa County District Schools Superintendent Karen Barber won a second term in the district where she has worked for 27 years, the Pensacola News Journal reported.
Citrus County School District residents picked a new leader to replace retiring Superintendent Brenda Himmel. Voters chose Assistant Superintendent Scott Hebert, who has also served the district as assistant principal, principal, district director, chief academic officer and assistant superintendent, according to the Citrus County Chronicle.

In Kentucky, Superintendent Rick Bolling is moving from Bath County Schools to take the helm at Clarke County Public Schools. Bolling has previously been a middle school teacher, high school math teacher, college professor, school counselor, assistant principal and principal.
Cris Valdez, a former interim superintendent and assistant superintendent of the Mission Consolidated Independent School District, has been selected as the Texas school system’s next superintendent. Valdez, who was Mission CISD’s interim from 2017-2018, was formerly an assistant superintendent in Garland ISD and interim superintendent of Weslaco ISD in 2021.
Ohio’s Ironton City Schools has welcomed former superintendent James Payne to lead the district again as superintendent. Payne, who graduated from the district in 1978, is credited with implementing a strategic plan, improving test scores and joining a consortium of neighboring districts to lower healthcare costs.
Assistant superintendent and former high school principal Jackson Parker was named the finalist to become the next superintendent of White Oak ISD in Texas.
In New Jersey, Assistant Superintendent Jessica Cangelosi-Hade has been promoted to the top spot at Hunterdon Central Regional High School District. Cangelosi-Hade has been with the district for five years.
Chad Shippee was also promoted, from pre-K-12 principal to superintendent of Bolton Central School District in New York.
Superintendents on the move: Retirements
A handful of superintendents announced their retirements over the past week, including:
- Stephen Bigelow, Bay City Public Schools (Michigan)
- Michael Conroy, Ocean View School District (California)
- Brent Hoover, Knott County Schools (Kentucky)
