Guilford County Schools Superintendents has helped the district set its sights on three areas crucial for the success of her students post-pandemic: expanding learning, high-intensity tutoring and acceleration—not remediation—by teaching kids grade-level content.

The charges stem from a May 3 incident in which a second-grade student brought an unloaded gun in a backpack to Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School in Grand Rapids.

Mississippi went from being ranked the second-worst state in 2013 for fourth-grade reading to 21st in 2022. Louisiana and Alabama, meanwhile, were among only three states to see modest gains in fourth-grade reading during the pandemic, which saw massive learning setbacks in most other states.

Since the pandemic, more students are school-avoidant, leaving parents feeling hopeless and schools unequipped to find a solution.
