The?facilities department at Dallas ISD?had built up a reputation for poor service over the years. It consistently ranked near the bottom on the district's annual culture surveys.
A message to K-12 leaders who are worried about sharing a shrinking pool of teachers with other districts: some states and school systems are giving out historic salary increases.
Female superintendents and superintendents of districts serving mostly students of color have been disproportionately impacted by turnover since the beginning of the pandemic though all leaders are reporting heavier workloads.
“We've had situations where people have come in and taken the job we think they are going to be OK and they are gone within a week of school starting. So there's a lot of scrambling," superintendent says.
The lightbulb went on when the wife of a Fayette County Public Schools bus driver was overheard saying her husband had long aspired to become a substitute teacher.
“I’ve been a superintendent for 17 years in Vermont and it seemed like it was time to choose my personal life,” said Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent Jeanne Collins. “While we’ve always had a 24/7 job, during COVID it really meant 24/7.”
