Women make up roughly three-fourths of K-12 teaching jobs, which are generally tied to fixed salary schedules. Yet according to a new research brief from the Brookings Institution, female teachers typically make thousands less than their male counterparts.
Alongside staff shortages and political turmoil, the average teacher salary has declined in all but four states since 2021, according to data collected by Scholaroo, a college scholarship search platform.
"I have made it my personal mission to maximize our district resources and seek to grow our tax base for the future," says Jason Snodgrass of his efforts to help his community thrive.
Almost all after-school programs have reopened, but staffing shortages and related issues mean one in four are still not operating at the capacity they were prior to COVID.
"Who was I to think that I could tell them what they needed or wanted in their own community?" says Dr. Margaret Crespo, superintendent of Laramie County School District-1 in Wyoming. Using this mindset, she now has a living, adaptable strategic plan.
“The County likes to say that they are focused on recruiting and retaining quality educators to provide the best learning experience for our students,” a news release from the teachers union states. “What they’ve proposed, however, will only drive existing teachers away to higher paying counties — and does nothing to make Baltimore County attractive to new teachers."
