Any high school can apply for the grants. Five schools will be selected to receive $500,000 each from XQ to redesign their schools. The money can be used to implement the new high school design, which might call for changing the class schedule, using technology in new ways or expanding career and technical opportunities.
By 2017, public school teachers' earnings topped the average in just Rhode Island. Since the early 1990s, public school teacher and staff earnings fell relative to the average worker in 42 states. The biggest relative drop came in Wisconsin, where pay is now only 90 percent of the workers' pay average statewide.
Warwick's school committee is seeking a court order declaring that the school budget approved by the city's council is not sufficient to let the committee comply with the law, regulations and contracts. The complaint also asks the court to order the city to increase its education appropriation by $4.9 million.
