How to empower teachers to differentiate, innovate and inspire

Educators share a common goal: to nurture every student’s potential and prepare them for a successful future based on knowledge, critical thinking, and adaptability.

High-quality instructional materials (HQIM) can provide a foundation for achieving this goal. These resources are rigorously vetted and aligned to standards, ensuring consistency, coherence, and academic rigor in our classrooms. However, to truly meet the diverse needs of our learners, HQIM must be complemented with thoughtfully chosen supplemental educational resources.

The combination of HQIM and supplemental tools empowers educators to differentiate instruction, provide timely and relevant lessons, foster meaningful opportunities for exploration, and increase student engagement—an approach that meets students where they are and propels them toward where they want to be.

Differentiating instruction with supplemental resources

Every classroom has students with unique strengths, challenges and learning preferences. While HQIM provide a structured pathway to academic achievement, it is often supplemental resources that enable teachers to make learning relevant and address the individual needs of their students.

Differentiating instruction for learners isn’t merely a strategy; it’s essential in today’s diverse learning environments. According to a recent report from Discovery Education, Education Insights 2024-025: Learning Today, Leading Tomorrow, which surveyed administrators, educators, students and parents about their views and goals for education, “About three-quarters of students believe that personalized learning would have a positive impact on their engagement, empowerment, and future readiness.”

As an example, consider a middle school math class using HQIM to teach fractions. Some students may grasp the concept quickly, while others may need help to connect it to real-world applications.

Supplemental resources like interactive math games, visual aids or personalized online practice can offer additional pathways for learning. These tools empower teachers to scaffold learning for those who need more support while also challenging those who are ready to advance.

Timely and relevant in a rapidly changing world

One limitation of HQIM is that they can become static or outdated in the face of a rapidly changing world, student needs and pedagogical advancements. Supplemental resources offer the flexibility to infuse current events, emerging technologies and evolving societal issues into the curriculum.

Supplemental materials can equip educators with the tools to be responsive and relevant in their teaching while providing a way to adapt to new challenges or leverage teachable moments.

Education is about more than the mastery of academic standards; it is also about inspiring curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of learning. Supplemental resources can open doors to exploration and enrichment beyond the confines of the core curriculum.
