In 2018, Greggory Daniels was laid off from his job as a parking valet, and friends suggested he apply for a security role at the San Francisco Unified School District. A product of the city’s public school system, he never thought he’d wind up working for it.
He got a call from Willie Brown Middle School, a sparkling new school perched on a hilltop over the 280 freeway in Silver Terrace. Just 15 minutes into the interview, Principal Charleston Brown cut things short: “You’re hired.”
Daniels was taken aback. Shouldn’t there have been more to the process? Reference checks? A second interview? Something?
