Hiring teachers is always top of mind for superintendents, principals and their teams and with shortages hitting most districts, it’s even more top of mind. Or, topmost of mind? Regardless, this week’s best schools of education rankings are worth a look as district leaders anticipate the next generation of prospective educators.
At the top of U.S. News and World Report’s best schools of education list is a tie between the world-renowned Teachers College at Columbia University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This is the first No. 1 ranking for the latter institution, which has landed in the top five in each of the last 11 years.
“These rankings highlight what we consider a significant strength of ours—and that’s the array of high-quality programs across our School of Education,” Diana Hess, dean of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Education, said in a statement.

The list ranks schools in several specific areas, such as curriculum and instruction, educational administration and supervision, elementary and secondary teacher education, and student counseling. The University of Wisconsin-Madison, for instance, ranked No. 1 for educational psychology.
