Older students and those in the Black, Latinx and LGBTQ communities are suffering higher rates of depression and anxiety during COVID and online learning, the latest Youth Truth survey has found.
Just more than half of high school students reported feeling emotionally impacted by COVID, compared to 39% of elementary school students.
High school students were also less likely than younger children to say they learned something almost every day.
These types of feelings among students have convinced leaders at Regional School Unit 57 in Maine to reopen school with a “soft landing” that’s focused on social-emotional learning as much as academics, says Erica Mazzeo, the director of curriculum, instruction and assessment.

“The great equalizer that is the threshold of the school building is removed and there’s no way to recreate that in thousands of individual homes,” Mazzeo said in a webinar Tuesday. “We are going to be addressing the known gaps but not assessing them because we know what gaps are.”
