The back-to-school banana shortage has been averted … at least for now.
School cafeterias will still be able to buy as many bananas and other foreign products as they need this year, despite new “Buy American” restrictions.
The regulations, adopted two years ago, bar schools from purchasing more than 10 percent of their food from abroad each year. The cap is slated to drop to 8 percent in 2028-2029 and 5 percent in 2031-2032.
