The Texas Education Agency has rejected Austin Independent School District’s bid for extra time to improve student performance at three North Austin middle schools next academic year, setting the stage for a state takeover of the entire school system.
Dobie, Webb and Burnet middle schools have long struggled on the state’s A-F accountability system, which is based largely on scores from the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, tests. Each school has scored four consecutive F grades.
State law has mandatory consequences when any campus achieves five failing grades in a row—the state must either close the offending campus or take over the entire school district, replacing the elected board of trustees with a TEA-appointed board of managers.
